Note on Plate 67:
Plate 67 (Szene im Yoshiwara) is misattributed as an independent brush drawing. It corresponds to a preparatory sketch (shita-e) for a fan print (uchiwa-e) by Utagawa Yoshitora (Japanese, fl. c. 1850–1880), a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797–1861). The related finished drawing is preserved as SVJP-0491.2025, in this collection, depicting courtesans and kamuro on the rooftop terrace of the Goseirō building in the New Yoshiwara. The misidentification likely resulted from limited knowledge of Japanese art and print production practices at the time, particularly within the Emile Javal collection, which is known for significant misunderstandings and misattributions regarding Japanese art and crafts.
