Contributor: Charles Gillot (French, 1853-1903) – A prominent printer and collector associated with the Japonisme movement. Despite his connoisseurial reputation, Gillot’s dating of the tsuba—from the 12th to the 16th century—is now considered inaccurate and reflects prevailing 19th-century misconceptions in the Western study of Japanese metalwork.
