Figures such as Aubrey Beardsley, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustave Doré, Isaac Cruikshank, and Adolphe Willette—each widely recognized for their artistic innovation and cultural influence—contributed to imagery that perpetuated harmful antisemitic tropes. This dissonance between aesthetic achievement and ideological complicity calls for serious reflection. The fact that such figures engaged in or contributed to antisemitic representation is not incidental; it underscores the extent to which prejudice was normalized and embedded within mainstream visual and literary discourse. Confronting this legacy is essential for a critical understanding of both the history of antisemitism and the ethical dimensions of artistic production.
