The series of investigative articles published in The Times, 16–18 August 1921 [LIB-2496.2020]. The “Protocols” in question refer to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion — a fabricated antisemitic text presented as the secret minutes of meetings in which Jewish leaders allegedly planned world domination, meetings that never occurred. First published in the Russian Empire in 1903, the work was compiled from earlier sources, notably Maurice Joly’s Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu (Brussels, 1864), from which substantial passages were appropriated and reworked to construct the forgery. The Protocols became a central instrument in the dissemination of antisemitic conspiracy theories worldwide. Their fraudulent nature was conclusively demonstrated, most prominently by Philip Graves in The Times (London) in 1921; nevertheless, the text continued to circulate internationally and remains in use among antisemitic groups.
Philip Graves’s articles exposing the Protocols as a forgery were translated and published by Павел Николаевич Милюков [Pavel Milyukov] (Russian, 1859–1943) in 1922 as the brochure Правда о „Сіонскихъ Протоколахъ“. Литературный подлогъ. — Парижъ: Издательство «Франко-Русская Печать», 1922 [LIB-1195.2016]. The importance of this translation lies in the fact that the Protocols had originally been issued in Russian, notably by Сергей Нилус (Russian, 1862–1929), and were aimed at a Russian audience, contributing to antisemitic agitation and pogroms. Published in Paris, a major centre of the post-Revolutionary Russian émigré community, Milyukov’s edition directly addressed that readership and sought to undermine the authority of the forgery within its original linguistic sphere.
