Title: Beauty with Umbrella (Kasa o sasu bijin, 傘を差す美人)
A full-length portrait of a woman holding a large paper umbrella (wagasa, 和傘), depicted in three-quarter view facing left. She is dressed in an outer kimono patterned with ivy leaves (tsuta, 蔦), layered over a boldly colored underrobe.
Her obi (帯) is tied at the front in the courtesan style and features a red and black kōshi (格子) check pattern. Her hair is styled in an elegant shimada (島田髷) coiffure with a red ribbon, and she gazes downward with a composed expression.
She walks barefoot in high wooden clogs (geta, 下駄), with the trailing hem (hikizuri, 引き摺り) of her robe sweeping the ground. The umbrella is opened prominently in front of her, shielding her upper body and creating a dramatic diagonal that anchors the composition.
This is a refined example of Eizan’s elegant bijin-ga, combining graceful pose, stylized patternwork, and a heightened sense of presence.
The colors in this impression remain superb, and the print is preserved in very good condition, remarkable for a vertical diptych of this period.
