Ballantyne Press [Ballantyne, Hanson & Co.] (Edinburgh, printer, fl. 1796–1916)

The Ballantyne Press was a Scottish printing house founded by James Ballantyne in Kelso in 1796 before permanently relocating to Edinburgh in 1803. Heavily financed and patronized by author Sir Walter Scott, the workshop became the primary printer for all of Scott's Waverley novels and poems, establishing a national reputation for high-quality text composition and rapid book production. In the late 19th century, the firm expanded its facilities to London, operating as Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. until its merger with Spottiswoode & Co. in 1915, which led to the permanent closure of the Edinburgh plant in 1916.
