Smidt, Hermann, Dr. (German, born 1854)

Dr. Hermann Smidt was a prominent German scholar, bibliophile, and author who became a central figure in the expatriate German arts community in Rome at the turn of the twentieth century. Deeply immersed in Italian cultural history, he is best remembered for his volume Ein Jahrhundert römisches Leben (A Century of Roman Life), which compiled historical accounts of German intellectuals living in Italy. As an avid book collector, Smidt cultivated a sophisticated private library and commissioned custom bookplates from leading artists of the era, including Otto Greiner and August Stoehr.

Otto Greiner’s (German, 1869–1916) bookplate for Dr. Smidt depicts a nude male figure standing at the seashore while concealing a fruit behind his back, accompanied by the Latin motto “Sapienti sat” (“Enough for the wise”). Executed in Greiner’s characteristic monumental and psychologically charged style, the composition reflects the early 20th-century fascination with classical anatomy, allegory, and individualized collector identity. The ex libris is documented in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest.
