Librairie Droz (Geneva, publisher, est. 1924)

Librairie Droz is a Geneva-based publishing house founded in 1924 by Eugénie Droz (born Eugénie Zahn; Swiss, 1893–1976), a romance scholar, editor, publisher, and writer from the Suisse romande. Specializing in scholarly works, it issues approximately eighty titles annually in literary criticism, art and book history, and the social sciences, and its catalogue comprises more than 6,000 titles. In addition to its own journals, it distributes major academic periodicals, including the Bibliothèque de l'École des chartes, Romania, and the Revue d'histoire du protestantisme, as well as publications of the École pratique des hautes études and the Faculties of Letters of the Universities of Geneva and Neuchâtel. The house was initially established in Paris in December 1924, with its first address at 13 avenue Félix-Faure, later moving to 25 rue de Tournon, before relocating to Geneva in 1947.

From its inception, the firm maintained a Geneva identity, reflected in its device derived from the printer’s mark of Jean de Stalle (Swiss, fl. 1487–1493), adapted by replacing his initials with those of its founder. In 1963, Eugénie Droz transferred the business to Giovanni Busino (Swiss, 1932–2023) and Alain Dufour (Swiss, 1930–2017), who continued its academic orientation; the firm moved to 11 rue Firmin-Massot in 1966. From 1995 to 2024 it was directed by Max Engammare (Swiss, 1953– ), under whom several series were launched and a digital transition undertaken. Since 2024, it has been directed by Charles Senard (French, fl. 21st century), and in November 2025 the company relocated to 31 rue Vautier in Carouge (Geneva).
