Elder, Alexander (Scottish, 1789–1876)

Born 4 June 1789 in Deskford, Banff, Scotland, to Adam Elder and Anne Elder (née Harrower); died 6 February 1876 in Lancing, Sussex, England; co-founder, with George Smith (1789–1846), of the publishing firm Smith, Elder & Co. (London, fl. 1816–1917), later acquired by John Murray IV (1851–1928) in 1917; since 2004 owned by Lagardère (est. 1992) under the Hachette UK (est. 2004) brand.
