George Allen & Unwin [G. Allen & Unwin Ltd.] (London, publisher, est. 1914)

George Allen (British, 1832–1907), a craftsman and engraver, served as John Ruskin's assistant before entering publishing. In 1871, he established George Allen & Sons, with Ruskin’s backing. The firm became George Allen & Co. Ltd. in 1911 after its merger with Swan Sonnenschein, and on 4 August 1914 was reconstituted as George Allen & Unwin after Stanley Unwin acquired a controlling interest.
