Smith, George (Scottish, 1789–1846)

Co-founder, with Alexander Elder (1790–1876), of the British publishing firm Smith, Elder & Co. (est. 1816), continued by George Murray Smith (1824–1901), and later acquired by John Murray IV (1851–1928) in 1917; since 2004 owned by Lagardère (est. 1992) under the Hachette UK (est. 2004) brand.
