John Lane Company (New York, publisher, fl. 1896–1921)

Established in 1896, the John Lane Company served as the American branch of London's prominent avant-garde publisher, The Bodley Head, bringing British aestheticism and modern literature to the United States market. Based in New York City with offices at 768 Fifth Avenue, the company averaged sixty new volumes annually and specialized in premium, beautifully bound editions of poetry, belles-lettres, and avant-garde prose. It was instrumental in popularizing notable authors like Rupert Brooke, Kenneth Grahame, Aubrey Beardsley, and Stephen Leacock across the Atlantic. Following a decline in founder John Lane’s health, the American business and its entire catalogue were purchased by Dodd, Mead & Co. in December 1921, establishing a distribution alliance with the London headquarters while discontinuing the independent New York operation.
