Lefman, Joseph [J. Lefman] (French, 1824–1890)
Joseph Lefman, a Parisian draftsman, wood engraver, and master lithographic printmaker specializing in mass-media production. Rather than creating original designs, he transferred sketches by prominent caricature artists onto wood blocks and lithographic stones for commercial printing. He was a primary collaborator with major 19th-century political cartoonists such as André Gill, Alfred Le Petit, and Cham, engraving their work for satirical journals including Le Grelot, L'Éclipse, and Le Pétard. His output directly documented the fall of the Second French Empire, the Paris Commune, and the rise of the Third Republic. In his later career, he produced commercial colour lithographs for early department stores like Le Bon Marché.
