Founded in Chicago in 1864 by Canadian immigrant Richard Robert Donnelley (1836–1899), R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company grew from a modest local print shop into a global industrial powerhouse. Operating under its famous Lakeside Press imprint, the firm pioneered mass-media production by printing iconic national staples like the Encyclopædia Britannica, Time and Life magazines, and the massive Sears Roebuck catalogues. Despite losing its entire operation in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the company rapidly rebuilt and continued to drive technical innovation, introducing high-speed heat-set printing in 1936 and a revered annual book-binding tradition known as the Lakeside Classics. Today, having transitioned from traditional commercial printing into a privately held provider of digital marketing, supply chain, and packaging solutions, RRD remains a cornerstone of American printing history.
