Salwey, Charlotte Maria [née Birch] (British, 1847–1938)

Charlotte Maria Salwey was an English author and independent scholar of Japanese art and material culture. As the daughter of British Museum Egyptologist Samuel Birch (1813–1885), she worked within the fields of linguistics and antiquarian research. Her primary publication, Fans of Japan (1894), stands as an early English-language monograph documenting the history, manufacturing techniques, and cultural symbolism of Japanese fans. She also published articles and illustrated monographs focusing on the folklore, art, and poetry of East Asian countries.
