Utagawa Toyokuni I [歌川豊国] (Japanese, 1769–1825)
Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769–1825) was one of the leading Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period and the head of the influential Utagawa school. Celebrated above all for his dynamic actor prints, he helped define the visual language of kabuki portraiture through vigorous line, theatrical presence, and vivid color. His work also encompassed bijin-ga and illustrated books, and his studio shaped the course of nineteenth-century ukiyo-e through a remarkable generation of pupils and successors.
