Play: Uwabami Oyoshi Uwasa no Adauchi [蟒於由曙評仇討(うわばみおよしうわさのあだうち)], performed at the Nakamura theatre in 1866 (Keiō 2), 1st month. The title roughly translates to "The Revenge of Uwabami Oyoshi", written by Segawa Joko III [三代目瀬川如皐] (Japanese, 19th century) — Samuel L. Leiter. Description: Two actors are shown in an interior scene. At left, Sawamura Tanosuke III appears as Uwabami Oyoshi, depicted in female costume with an elaborate coiffure adorned with a comb, ribbon, and hairpins, and layered robes; the green outer robe bears the family crest of an encircled chrysanthemum bud. She turns her head to the right, in three-quarter view, toward her companion. At right, Nakamura Shikan IV, also shown in three-quarter view, appears as Jirōkichi, dressed in a chequered robe and holding a closed folding fan. Vertical cartouches identify the actors and roles. A distant pine tree is visible outside.
