Minamoto no Yoshitsune [源義経; Ushiwakamaru, 牛若丸] (Japanese, military commander, 1159–1189)
Japanese military commander of the late Heian period and one of the principal heroes of the Genpei War (1180–1185). Youngest son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo and Tokiwa Gozen. As a child, he was known as Ushiwakamaru (牛若丸). A celebrated figure in Japanese history, literature, and art, he is frequently depicted in ukiyo-e prints and theatrical works.
