ふしみ常盤 / 風流絵兄弟
ふしみ常盤 / 風流絵兄弟
Color woodblock print for a rigid fan (uchiwa-e), 210 × 282 mm. One of a series of six prints; each design pairs a contemporary genre scene with a historical episode depicted in an inset cartouche.
Foreground. Running female figure in a dark blue winter coat (dotera, 褞袍) with black fur-trimmed collar; head wrapped in white cloth with blue snowflake pattern; infant pressed to her chest; young child behind her, wrapped in a red kimono with floral patterns; both woman and child in wooden snow geta (下駄). Red-and-yellow striped umbrella (kasa, 傘) raised above the group. Snow on the ground.
Background. Snowy riverscape; boat on the river at right; snow-covered trees.
Cartouche, upper right. Pink ground; scene depicting Tokiwa Gozen (常盤御前) with her three children fleeing through the snow following the Heiji Rebellion (1160) — the legendary episode in which she sought refuge with her sons, including the young Ushiwakamaru (牛若丸, later Minamoto no Yoshitsune), after the defeat of the Minamoto clan; the main scene functions as a contemporary mitate (見立絵) of this episode. Series title 風流絵兄弟 is inscribed adjacent.
Inscriptions. Lower right: artist’s signature 香朝樓國貞画 (Kōchōrō Kunisada ga). Lower left: publisher’s mark 十 (Kojimaya Jūbei); date seal dog year (戌, 1838); censor seal kiwame (極). Binding holes along the right margin.
