Ancient Greek glazed terracotta kylix (cup with a shallow bowl and a stem), ca. 350 BC. Dimensions: 14.4 x 11 cm The primary use for the kylix was drinking wine (usually mixed with water, and sometimes other flavourings) at a symposium or male "drinking party" in the ancient Greek world, so they are often decorated with scenes of a humorous, light-hearted, or sexual nature that would only become visible when the cup was drained. -
A vessel of flattened ovoid form supported on a tall splayed foot and surmounted by a short neck with the galleried rim. The shoulders set with a pair of loop handles, the body moulded on both sides with a Phenix surrounded with meandering floral and foliate scrolls. Covered with irregular splashes of green, amber, cream, and blue glazes, dripping down the foot. Foot bottom unglazed (beige body). China, the Tang dynasty [唐朝] (618 – 907). Egypt, Late Period. The oval amulet with multiple pierced holes for stitching to the outer garments of a mummy or the mummy wrappings, reeded wings and braided claws, marine blue in colour. According to the Brooklyn Museum, such faience amulets formed part of the beadwork pattern and served to protect the mummy through their magical properties. It served as a substitute heart that would ensure continued existence in the hereafter. A similar example at the Brooklyn Museum dated ca. 712-342 BC.
