Artist: Jan Lievens (Dutch, 1607–1674), or circle
Engraver & publisher: Edward Lutterell [Luttrell] (British, c.1650–1737), attributed
Place/Date: England (probably London), c.1709:
Medium: Mezzotint; black ink on laid paper
Dimensions: Image 97 × 79 mm; sheet 105 × 79 mm
Printed inscriptions:
Lower margin: The Great Czar (engraved in English round-hand).
Within image, upper left: EL monogram scratched through the ground (printing reversed).
Verso inscription:
Upper left in ink: “Un*t 5–5683” (owner cat. No.); lower right in pencil: “15 –“ (price). Right edge with later paper guard.
Description:
Bust in ¾ profile facing left, the sitter wearing a wrapped turban with trailing band and a heavy fur mantle; neutral dark background. The title is a marketing caption and does not identify a specific ruler; the image belongs to the Netherlandish “Oriental head” tradition rather than a portrait of any particular person.
Note:
Small album-format mezzotint with evenly rocked ground (visible cross-mesh) and broad burnishing for lights; lightly ruled guideline beneath the title. Lettered state (title present), with an internal EL cipher consistent with Luttrell’s practice. Composition ultimately derived from a Lievens “Oriental head” type; close to Luttrell’s signed pastel Portrait of a Man in a Fur-Lined Jacket and Hat (1709), which depends on Lievens and likewise omits the Golden Fleece.
