Artist: Stefano della Bella (Italian, 1610–1664)
Original title: Quatre Turcs à mi-corps, coiffés de turbans
Date/Place: c. 1662 (probably Florence)
State: I or II
Medium: Etching; black ink; laid paper; watermark: trefoil on staff between initials E and A.
Dimensions: Image 82 × 146 mm; sheet 85 × 150 mm
Description: Four bust-length male figures in Ottoman dress arranged across the sheet. The two at right face left; the two at left face right. Varied headgear—high wound turbans and, at the extreme right, a fur cap—emphasises costume types. Broad, sweeping hatching and plate-tone create a wash-like modelling of shoulders and drapery. De Vesme/Massar records two states: (1) plate less worked, with a strong wash-like effect, especially on the back of the figure seen from behind and on the sleeve of the bearded man; (2) plate finished, the wash effect gradually weakened. Plate size in De Vesme: c. 78 × 146 mm.
Catalogue raisonné: De Vesme/Massar p. 88, no. 285: Quatre Turcs à mi-corps, coiffés de turbans.
