Translation: “Peter the Czar’s conduct after the victory over his enemies. He invited the most distinguished Swedish prisoners to his table and said to them: ‘I drink to the health of my teachers in the art of war!’—words that did him no less honour than they did them.”
Description: Frontispiece engraved by Johann Caspar Weinrauch in 1793 for the ninth volume of the sixteen-volume German edition of ‘Universalhistorie alter, mittler und neuer Zeiten’ by Claude-François-Xavier Millot, with additions and corrections by Wilhelm Ernst Christiani; published in Vienna by Franz Haas in 1794. Lavish banquet following victory over the Swedes: Peter the Great seated beneath a canopy at a long table, receiving high-ranking Swedish prisoners; bustling attendants, dogs and vessels in the foreground; deep arcaded interior beyond. The caption survives as a detached printed slip mounted below the image.
