Description:
Two panoramic scenes by Romeyn de Hooghe commemorating the departure of William of Orange from the Dutch Republic and his landing in Brixham (Torbay) during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The upper register depicts the embarkation from Brielle on 11 November 1688; the lower register shows the landing on the English coast on 15–16 November 1688. Each scene is accompanied by detailed bilingual legends identifying geographical features, ships, regiments, and notable individuals. At the centre, an oval portrait of William III is flanked by allegorical figures and military trophies.

Shortly after he acceded to the English throne in 1685, King James II Stuart converted to Roman Catholicism. Fearing that James would ally himself with the Republic’s Catholic enemy, King Louis XIV of France, and launch a joint attack on the Dutch Republic, Stadholder William III secretly prepared a military expedition against his brother-in-law. On 15 November 1688, William landed near Brixham with fifty warships and more than 14,000 soldiers, initiating the campaign against the English king. Romeyn de Hooghe, the engraver, travelled in William’s entourage; the design is by Hekhuisen.

A coloured impression of this print was published in the Atlas van der Hagen, a lavishly illustrated seventeenth-century atlas comprising manuscript and printed maps, charts, views, and topographical prints, compiled for the States General of the Netherlands and now preserved in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague.

Historical context:
Invited by English politicians and military leaders to depose King James II, William landed at Torbay on 15–16 November 1688 with some 14,000 troops. He adopted a defensive stance while James’s support collapsed, leading to William and Mary’s joint coronation in April 1689.
