Description:
Large ceremonial view of the reception of Stadholder-King William III at the Binnenhof, The Hague, on 5 February 1691. The scene depicts processions of horsemen and carriages moving toward the court buildings, with crowds of spectators in the square, arcades, and windows. The Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights) is prominently shown at right, surrounded by civic architecture. Above, a crowned heraldic shield bearing a lion rampant, flanked on the left by an angel holding a torch, with a cluster of flags, and on the right by the figure of Athena wearing a plumed helmet and holding a ribbon lettered in Latin VIGILATE DEO CONFIDE. The group is seated on a cloud. The bilingual title is inscribed on two scroll banners extending from either side of the composition: ZIJN MAJESTEIT VERWELKOMT OP HET BINNEHOF (left) — RECEPTION DE SA MAJESTÉ DANS LA COUR (right). The sheet belongs to the series of 14 engravings from Govert Bidloo’s Komste van Zyne Majesteit Willem III… (The Hague: Arnold Leers, 1691), a lavishly illustrated account of the king’s ceremonial entry and festivities in Holland following his accession to the English throne.
