Born in Edo in 1791 as the son of a theatre teahouse proprietor and a daughter of Ichikawa Danjūrō V (五代目 市川團十郎). Following the death of Ichikawa Danjūrō VI (六代目 市川團十郎), he was adopted into the Ichikawa acting family and made his stage debut in 1794 as Ichikawa Shinnosuke I (市川新之助). He performed principally at the Nakamura-za (中村座), Ichimura-za (市村座), and Kawarazaki-za (河原崎座) in Edo, later appearing extensively in Kyoto and Osaka during his exile (1842–1850). Renowned for aragoto (荒事) and tachiyaku (立役) roles, his best-known performances included Sukeroku (助六), Benkei (弁慶) in Kanjinchō (勧進帳), and Shibaraku (暫). He compiled the Kabuki Jūhachiban (歌舞伎十八番), the "Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays" of the Ichikawa family repertoire. Died in Edo on 23 March 1859.
