Artist: Raphael [Raffaello Sanzio] (Italian, 1483–1520)
Engraver & publisher: Anonymous Italian engraver; publisher not stated
Place/Date: Italy, early 19th century
Medium: Etching; ink on toned laid paper
Dimensions: image/plate 285 × 405 mm; laid down to support 345 × 465 mm
Printed inscriptions: None
Description: Interior court before an enthroned ruler (Pharaoh) under a canopy; Joseph stands at centre, right hand raised as he interprets the dream; counsellors at right, soldiers at left; landscape glimpsed through the three arches; two roundels above depict related dream imagery. After Raphael's fresco in the Loggia of the Vatican.
Condition: Vertical repaired tear c. 100 mm through the centre; overall browning.
Technique note: Composition corresponds to Raphael’s Logge scene but differs from known etched versions; plate and publisher not identified.
Reference: Victoria and Albert Museum № DYCE.1690. Giacomo Bossi (Italian, 1750–1804) after Rafael; Pictures Peristylii Vaticani, manus Raphaelis Sancii (series title). Inscription: IOSEPH INTERPRETATUR PHARAONIS SOMNIUM — Gen: XLI. — Raphael Sanxius pin: — Jac: Bosui sculp: — N.XXVI. Differs from my impression in that it has an ornamental grotesque frame with telamons (atlantes); no soldiers at the far left; a curtain drawn across the right-hand arch; and the two dream roundels set farther apart.
