Artist: Jacques Lubin (French, 1637–1703)
After: Sir Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599–1641)
Date: 1696
Medium: Burin engraving on laid paper; sheet 419 × 280 mm; platemark 255 × 195 mm
Title: Portrait of Jacques Callot, Engraver (Jacques Callot, graveur)

Description:
Half-length portrait of Jacques Callot, turned three-quarters to the left with eyes directed towards the viewer, wearing a wide lace collar and buttoned doublet. The sitter is shown within an oval frame, beneath which appears a coat of arms: a helmeted shield with feathers, bearing five stars. The inscription below identifies the sitter as “Jacquer Calot, Graveur”, and is signed “Jac. Lubin Sculp.”

The composition derives from Anthony van Dyck’s portrait of Callot, engraved by Lucas Vorsterman the Elder (Flemish, 1595–1675) as part of his celebrated Icones Principum Virorum (Iconography) series [LIB-2600.2020], but is reinterpreted here with additional heraldic ornament and an elaborate frame.

Context:
Lubin specialised in engraved portraits of notable artists and men of letters. His 1696 image of Callot, produced more than sixty years after the sitter’s death, reflects the enduring esteem for Callot’s oeuvre in France.
