	L. 1340 (M. 565) — L’Enrolement des Troupes (The Enlistment of Troops) Description: On the left, two recruits present themselves to an officer seated at a desk resting on a drum; another man receives an arquebus and is sent towards the group at right, where an officer under a tree records payment; cavalry and camp tents before the fortified city Inscription: Above the line: Israel excud. cum Privilegio Regis. In the bottom right corner: number “2.” Below the line: Ce Metal que Pluton dans ses veines enserre, / Qui faict en mesme temps, et la paix, et la guerre, | Attire le soldat, sans crainte des dangers, / Du lieu de sa naissance, aux Pais estrangers. | Ou s’estant embarqué pour suivre la Milice, / Il faut que sa vertu s’arme contre le vice. English translation: However harsh may be the blows of Mars, / And the strikes his arm delivers everywhere, | This does not astonish the invincible courage / Of those whose valour knows how to combat the storm. | And who, to acquire the title of warriors, / Water their laurels with the blood of enemies.

Below the line: Ces courages brutaux dans les hostelleries, / Du beau nom de butin couvrent leurs voleries; | Ils querellent exprès ennemis du repos, / Pour ne payer leur hoste, et prennent jusques aux pots. | Ainsi du bien d’autruy leur humeur s’accommode, / Quand on les a soulez, et seruis à leur mode. English translation: These brutal spirits in the inns, / Under the fair name of booty hide their thefts; | They deliberately quarrel, enemies of rest, / To avoid paying their host, they take even the pots. | Thus, with others’ goods, their humour is satisfied, / When they are drunk, and served to their liking.

Inscription: Above the line: Israel ex. Cum Privil. Reg. In the bottom right corner: number “5.” Below the line: Voyla les beaux explois de ces cœurs inhumains, / Ils rauagent par tout rien n’eschappe à leurs mains; | L’un pour auoir de l’or, inuente des supplices, / L’autre à mil forfaicts anime ses complices; | Et tous d’un mesme accord commettent mechamment / Le vol, le rapt, le meurtre, et le viollement. English translation: Behold the cruel exploits of these inhuman hearts, / They ravage everywhere, nothing escapes their hands, | One, to gain gold, invents new torments, / Another spurs his accomplices to a thousand crimes. | And all in accord commit wickedly / Theft, rape, murder, and violation.
