Utagawa Kunisada. Minamoto Yoriyoshi, from the series Fashionable Matching Pictures (Fūryū ekyōdai) / Fan print, [1838].
源より義 / 風流絵兄弟
源より義 / 風流絵兄弟
Color woodblock print for a rigid fan (uchiwa-e), 210 × 275 mm. One of a series of six prints; each design pairs a contemporary genre scene with a historical episode depicted in an inset cartouche.
Foreground. Male actor, identifiable as Ichimura Uzaemon XII (十二代目市村羽左衛門), body turned to the left, head turned to the right; right foot visible, shod in geta (下駄); richly patterned brown kimono with geometric and floral motifs in blue and olive green; red obi with white hemp-leaf tie-dye pattern (麻の葉, asanoha). He holds a small red ball in his left hand — the floating ball of a water automaton toy (水からくり, mizu karakuri) — and operates the mechanism with his right. The toy consists of two rectangular chambers connected by a horizontal bamboo tube; a vertical tube rising from one chamber is designed to produce a fountain jet suspending a ball in the air, with multiple sprays radiating outward; a second tall bamboo tube rising from the other chamber, wrapped at the base to simulate a rocky cliff, supports a water wheel (水車, suisha) at the top; a water reservoir is visible at the upper edge of the composition. The main scene alludes to the legendary episode in which Minamoto no Yoriyoshi miraculously produced water by striking a rock with his bow during the drought of 1054.
Background. Mountain landscape with waterfall to the left; rocky terrain; river with pine trees on the bank; three female figures on the shore; small island with stone lantern (石灯籠, ishidōrō). Gradated pink sky. Lower portion of composition framed by cloud-shaped reserve in red.
Cartouche (upper right). Blue ground; armored warrior figure — Minamoto no Yoriyoshi (源頼義) — in full battle dress, striking a rock with his bow to miraculously produce a stream of water; series title 風流絵兄弟 inscribed adjacent.
Inscriptions. Right: artist's signature 香朝樓國貞画 (Kōchōrō Kunisada ga). Left: publisher's mark 十 (Kojimaya Jūbei); censor seal kiwame (極). No date seal. Binding holes along the left margin.
