Upper register. Celestial scene on clouds: Orihime (織姫), the Weaving Princess, in elaborate court robes, standing beside a loom (織機, shokki), holding a spindle; Hikoboshi (彦星), the Cowherd, in ancient court robes with arabesque pattern, holding a military fan (gumbai, 軍配); a black ox with blue horns standing behind him. A bridge visible among the clouds; two black magpies (鵲, kasasagi), one perched on the bridge, one in flight above. All figures allude to the legend of Tanabata (七夕).
Lower register. Festival scene in Shin-Yoshiwara (新吉原), Edo, on the occasion of Tanabata (七夕):
Left: enclosed space with striped red-and-white poles, bounded by a straw bale (俵, tawara); a military fan (gumbai, 軍配) and a bow tied to the poles; the enclosure filled with red and blue flowers. A tub of water with a ladle nearby.
Center: a public well (井戸, ido) inscribed with the character 水 (mizu, "water"); a triangular roof structure inscribed 五丁町 (Gochōmachi, "Fifth Quarter"), referring to Shin-Yoshiwara (新吉原), the licensed pleasure quarter of Edo.
Right: two children playing hanetsuki (羽根突き) with battledores (hagоita, 羽子板) and shuttlecock (hane, 羽根); a boy wearing a blue head cloth; a girl with a floral hair ornament (kanzashi, 簪) and a basket (籠, kago) on her back. A street lantern on a post in the foreground.
Background: red building with lattice wall (格子, kōshi); a pine tree with a horizontal pole from which a bundle of straw (藁, wara) is suspended, at the far right.
