Color woodblock print for a rigid fan (uchiwa-e), 210 × 277 mm. One of a series of six prints; each design pairs a contemporary genre scene with a historical episode depicted in an inset cartouche.
Foreground. Male actor, identifiable as Onoe Kikugorō III (by likeness; not inscribed), standing on a river bank under a blooming cherry tree; body turned slightly to the right, head in three-quarter view turned left; black haori (羽織) with white family crest (家紋, mon); blue checkered obi; both hands raised, attaching a letter or poem to a cherry tree branch; writing brush held in his mouth; hair in topknot with blue shaved scalp. The scene alludes to the episode of Taira no Tadanori entrusting his poems before his final battle.
Background. River landscape with boats; green hills on the far bank; red-orange gradated sky.
Cartouche (upper left). Blue sky, green ground; blooming cherry tree; armored warrior figure with sword, folding fan, and quiver of arrows — Taira no Tadanori (平忠度) in his final moments; print title Tadanori (忠のり) inscribed lower right; additional inscription upper left unread; series title 風流絵兄弟 inscribed adjacent.
Inscriptions. Right: artist's signature 香朝樓國貞画 (Kōchōrō Kunisada ga) within red double-gourd cartouche. Left: publisher's mark 十 (Kojimaya Jūbei), two-thirds trimmed; censor seal kiwame (極), two-thirds trimmed. No date seal. Binding holes along the right margin.
